Abhyasika

Under this program, volunteers of Abhyasika visit Phule Nagar (beside IIT) daily, in turns, to teach needy students. Students from the locality gather at Police Chowki Room in the evening. They are supposed to do their regular home work in presence of our volunteers. If students face any kind of difficulty in their studies, then volunteers assist them in realizing the concepts, mistakes and clearing their doubts. Generally students are advised to prepare a list of their weak points in particular subjects and then are guided accordingly. Each group member gets a chance to visit once or twice per week, so that each volunteer gets a chance to contribute equally. At the same time, volunteers are involved in designing some non trivial teaching modules which are aimed at learning science and mathematics concepts practically.
For ex. for a class VI student, it is difficult to grasp the meaning of area of a circle, and students generally prefer to learn all such formulae by heart, rather than understanding the concept behind those. In this particular example, we designed a module, in which we told the students to come out on a ground and fix a center by placing a stone, and encircling it roughly by lime. Then we asked students to run around the marked circumference, then away from it, and towards the center, and asked them what conclusion they had in terms of time, distance etc. After this activity, they were given the formula for area of a circle and asked to solve various simple geometry problems. In this way, we try to make learning more interesting and more fun for them.
This activity is carried 6 days per week.
